The Trace of the Stranger (alternative title: The Stranger) is an American film noir from 1946. It was directed by Orson Welles, who also played a leading role.

Franz Kindler, a Nazi commander, manages to escape to Harper, Connecticut, to start a new life under the name Charles Rankin. He teaches history at a renowned college there. One day two strangers appear in Harper looking for Kindler. When he senses danger, he kills one of the men. In order to convict Rankin, the other turns to his fiancée Mary, who thereby puts her life in danger.
